Arctic Monkeys were hailed as one of the first bands to gain widespread notice over the Internet, with commentators speculating that they could signal a shift in how new bands are promoted and marketed. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), their debut album, became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history and has been recognized as one of the best debut albums ever. At the 2007 Brit Awards, it was named Best British Album. Favorite Worst Nightmare (2007), the band’s second album, was critically lauded and won Best British Album at the 2008 BRIT Awards. After that, they released Humbug (2009) and Sucked It and See (2010). (2011). With their critically praised fifth album AM (2013), which was followed by the global smash “Do I Wanna Know?” the band’s international success grew even further. It reached number one on four Billboard charts and was certified platinum in the United States. The album was their third to win British Album of the Year at the 2014 BRIT Awards. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018) marked a significant change from the band’s prior guitar-heavy output instead of focusing on piano. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, their second after Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. With their first five albums, the band became the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the United Kingdom. The band has received seven Brit Awards, including three for Best British Group and three for British Album of the Year, making them the first band to ever “do the double” (win in both categories) three times; a Mercury Prize for Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not; and 20 NME Awards. They’ve also been nominated for five Grammy Awards and were selected for the Mercury Prize in 2007, 2013, and 2018. NME’s and other versions of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time lists feature both Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, and AM.
